THE KOH SAMUI FIELD GUIDE

Your first day on Koh Samui:
choose your beach, then your evening.

Named places. Useful choices. Your kind of day.

Where to eat, what to see and where to go tonight in Koh Samui.

Wat Plai Laem for a temple stop, Bophut for waterfront food, Bangrak for seafood and Chaweng for a party. You do not need the same night as everyone else.

Samui's useful distinction is between areas. Bophut, Bangrak and Chaweng offer quite different ways to spend a day, so choose by what you actually want to do rather than treating the whole island as one town. Here are four concrete options. Combine nearby stops, or pick one beach and one restaurant if that is all the time you have.

Northeast Samui

For a temple stop: Wat Plai Laem

THE IDEA
Colourful temple architecture and a cultural stop.
USEFUL TO KNOW
An active religious site, not a beach-club photo set.
Budai statue and temple grounds at Wat Plai Laem in Koh Samui

At Wat Plai Laem, look for the large Guanyin figure and the Budai statue set around the water. It is a different experience from simply driving a full circuit of the island to tick off beach names.

Keep beachwear for the beach and follow the signs on clothing and footwear. This is a useful northeast-island stop before a meal in Bangrak; use actual journey times from your accommodation rather than assuming everything on Samui is a short walk.

Beach & dinner

For waterfront food: Bophut and Coco Tam's

THE IDEA
A browse around Fisherman's Village followed by a beach-facing meal.
USEFUL TO KNOW
This is a restaurant outing; a seafront seat is not guaranteed.

Choose Bophut's Fisherman's Village when you want an evening built around food and the waterfront. Coco Tam's is a named option here: the Tourism Authority lists its Italian food and wood-fired pizza, with beach seating as part of the appeal.

Check the current menu and seating arrangements before settling on it. Come for pizza and the setting; do not build a precise evening around an unverified fire-show time copied from an old itinerary.

Bangrak

For a seafood-led dinner: Supattra Thai Dining

THE IDEA
A booked Thai dinner chosen around the day's ingredients.
USEFUL TO KNOW
Holiday closure: the operator says it is closed until 18 November 2026. Confirm reopening before booking a later visit.

Supattra Thai Dining in Bangrak works from a daily blackboard rather than a fixed printed food menu. Fish and seafood lead the offer, with meat and vegetarian choices also described by the restaurant. Ask what is available rather than arriving determined to order a dish from an old photo.

As checked on 24 October 2026, the restaurant's reservations page says it is closed for its annual holiday until 18 November 2026. For dinner during the break, Bophut's Coco Tam's is the alternative covered above, with pizza and a beach setting rather than the same seafood-led menu. For a later Supattra visit, confirm reopening directly. Its regular service is Tuesday–Saturday, and online requests need at least a day's notice and the restaurant's confirmation.

Beach nightlife

For a proper night out: Chaweng and ARKbar

THE IDEA
DJs and an organised beach-party setting.
USEFUL TO KNOW
A different mood from a conversation-led waterfront dinner.

If you want music and a night out, choose Chaweng rather than sending yourself to a quiet dinner by default. ARKbar's own programme lists beach parties, DJs and fire performances, making it a concrete place to check for tonight's plan.

Use the official programme for the date you are visiting. Ask about any entry, seating or pool-use conditions separately: seeing a beach-club event advertised does not tell you that every part of the venue is included. Arrange your return transport around the night you want.

THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING

Before you decide.

Where should I go if I want to go out on my first night?

Chaweng is the choice in this guide, with ARKbar as a specific venue whose current programme you can check.

Which option works for a dinner rather than a party?

Coco Tam's in Bophut gives you pizza and a beach setting. Supattra in Bangrak is the seafood-led Thai option for a later visit: its operator says it is closed until 18 November 2026, so confirm reopening and a table before planning dinner there.

Will saving this create plans in My Diary?

No. Saving keeps the guide as an idea. Choose what to add to a day yourself; nothing here makes a booking or changes your trip automatically.

Keep the idea.

Save this guide to your favourites. It stays an idea—not an automatic plan in your trip.

The detail behind the guide.

Researched by the Thailand Diary team. This is not a first-hand visit, a hotel inspection or a booking offer. Updated 24 October 2026 to reflect Supattra Thai Dining's operator-announced closure until 18 November 2026. Its reservations page and booking conditions were rechecked; reopening still needs confirmation. Other linked sources were checked on 15 October 2026. Area comparisons and suggestions are editorial judgements, not first-hand visits.
