First, get your bearings in Koh Samui.
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Understand how the bases relate before comparing rooms.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- A broad destination label does not describe every property’s setting.

Samui works as a collection of beach towns rather than one resort with different hotel names. Bophut gives the north coast an evening centre around Fisherman’s Village; Chaweng is the more energetic choice, and Lamai offers another established beach-and-restaurant setting. Maenam leans towards a slower north-coast stay. Farther west, Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam change the emphasis again: the property, open space and time on that coast become a bigger part of the experience.
The question is not which beach wins a ranking, but which one supports the evenings you want to repeat. A quiet western retreat can be exactly right for a holiday spent there, yet a frustrating compromise if every dinner is planned on the opposite side of the island. Arrivals also differ: the airport and the island’s ferry piers are separate starting points. Establish your booked arrival point before judging how neatly a hotel fits the beginning and end of the trip.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY NEARBY
The places behind the area names.
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Specific food, sightseeing or transport anchors.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- A district name does not establish the walk from a particular hotel.
Bophut: Coco Tam's and Bophut beach For waterfront browsing and dinner around Fisherman's Village. Not the same nightlife scene as Chaweng.
Bangrak: Supattra Thai Dining For a northeast-island base; check individual restaurants for the dates of your stay. Supattra's operator says it is closed until 18 November 2026; confirm reopening before planning dinner there. Check the exact property's beach access too: the area name is not a beachfront promise.
Chaweng: ARKbar on Chaweng beach For a beach-club evening within your chosen neighbourhood. Choose room position carefully if late music is not part of the holiday you want.
01 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Bophut
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Bophut for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
A balanced first-time base with Fisherman’s Village, restaurants and a comfortable evening stroll. It feels polished and can be busy on market nights.
Bophut suits a traveller who values an evening centre and restaurants near Fisherman’s Village. Check the exact walking route from the property rather than the district label. A room farther along the coast may still need transport for the evening you imagined.
02 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Chaweng
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Chaweng for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
The strongest choice for nightlife, a broad beach and maximum convenience. Stay away from the centre if sleep matters more than being inside the action.
Chaweng offers a broad visitor scene, but the exact part matters. Ask about late-night noise and whether the room faces a busy road or entertainment area. A property described as close to the action may be perfect for one group and frustrating for another.
03 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Lamai
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Lamai for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
A smaller, more relaxed resort centre with an easy beach-holiday rhythm. It still has plenty of restaurants without Chaweng’s scale.
Lamai is a useful compromise for people who want a recognisable beach-town centre without making Chaweng the default. Compare the hotel’s stretch of coast with the places you want to eat. A beach name alone does not guarantee easy access along the shore.
04 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Maenam
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Maenam for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
A quieter north-coast choice for slower stays and longer beaches. Check evening transport and the immediate hotel surroundings.
Maenam can suit a slower stay, provided the practical details work. Check the road crossing, nearby meals and the last leg from your arrival pier. A quieter base is most enjoyable when you do not need to organise a car for every small errand.
05 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
Western bases for space, sunsets and resort time. They are less convenient for repeatedly crossing to the island’s busiest areas.
Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam are deliberate western-coast choices. They suit resort time and slower evenings more than repeated outings to the east. Price an ordinary return journey before treating a cheaper room as a saving over the whole trip.
