Find your kind of stay
A beautiful room is only half the decision. The other half is what happens when you walk out of it. Before comparing pools and pillows, decide what you want an ordinary Phuket day to feel like.
There is no single “best area” for every trip. Start with the things you will do repeatedly: beach mornings, late dinners, town walks or afternoons at the hotel. Then choose a base that makes those days easier.

Kata & Karon
- A GOOD FIT IF
- You want the beach to be the main event.

- An area name is not a promise of an easy beach walk.
If your ideal day starts with sand rather than a schedule, put these west-coast areas on your shortlist. Kata includes two bays, Kata Yai and Kata Noi; Karon is a separate, longer beach to the north. They are neighbouring choices, not one interchangeable hotel district.
Our starting point for a first beach holiday would be Kata, then Karon if you prefer the idea of a longer stretch of shore. Both have visitor services and places to eat. Compare the actual walk from each property to the sand and to somewhere you would enjoy dinner—not just the distance shown beside its name.
Before booking, ask about the route: steps, hills, road crossings and where you can enter the beach. If you have a pushchair or mobility needs, a short-looking journey on a map is not enough evidence of an accessible one.
02 / MAKE ROOM FOR A LATE NIGHT
Patong

- You want entertainment to be part of the holiday.

- Choose your street and room carefully if quiet sleep matters.
Patong is the deliberate choice for a trip with nightlife in it. Phuket’s provincial tourism information identifies entertainment, shopping and visitor facilities as central to the area. If you want evenings with plenty of options, that is a reason to consider it—not something to apologise for.
The useful question is how close you want to sleep to that energy. Do not assume that every Patong hotel is noisy, or that a room described as quiet will suit you. Look at the exact address, recent guest comments about sound and the position of the room you are booking.
Our view: choose Patong when going out is a repeat plan. If you only want one night there, compare the cost and practicality of a return journey with spending the whole holiday in that setting.
03 / SWAP THE BEACH BAG FOR A WANDER
Phuket Old Town

- Architecture, food stops and street life are your priorities.

- This is a town stay, not a walk-out beach holiday.
Old Town gives you a different starting point: historic streets rather than a beach frontage. Phuket’s provincial guide highlights Sino-Portuguese architecture around Thalang Road and neighbouring streets. That makes it a natural candidate for people who enjoy exploring a place on foot, with pauses rather than a packed attraction list.
We would consider it for a town-focused stay, or a short chapter alongside a beach base. Choose a property near the streets you actually want to explore, and check current opening days before building an evening around one market or restaurant.
Think carefully if the plan is to head to the west-coast beaches every morning. Staying in town and repeatedly travelling to the coast may not give you the holiday you imagined. Equally, do not move hotels just to tick a box: a single visit may be enough for your interests.
04 / LET THE STAY BE PART OF THE TRIP
Bang Tao

- You want time at your hotel, not just a bed between outings.

- Check how the hotel, beach and evening plans connect.
Bang Tao is one of Phuket’s long beaches, and the provincial guide identifies the Laguna resort complex as part of the area. It belongs on your shortlist if a resort-led holiday appeals: time to enjoy where you are staying, with outings fitted around it rather than the other way round.
Our advice is to compare individual properties here, not an imagined single Bang Tao experience. A beach address, an inland apartment and a resort with its own facilities can produce quite different days. Ask whether advertised beach access is on foot or by shuttle, and whether any shuttle runs when you need it.
A room deal is only useful if the whole stay fits your budget. Add the journeys and meals you expect to pay for; do not assume that either “resort” or “apartment” automatically means better value.
05 / KEEP YOUR DAYS IN THE SOUTH
Rawai & Nai Harn

- You want to explore the southern part of the island.

- These are different coastal settings; check which one you are booking.
Do not treat Rawai and Nai Harn as two names for the same beach. The provincial guide describes Rawai’s boats and offshore excursions, while Nai Harn is a separate bay near the island’s southern cape. Use the exact location—not a broad “Rawai” search label—to decide whether a property matches your plans.
We would shortlist this part of Phuket when the places you want to spend time are also in the south. Start with two or three realistic outings, then check how you would get to each one from the hotel. A lovely-looking villa can still be the wrong choice if every meal or beach visit needs a journey you have not allowed for.
Do not build the budget around hiring a scooter unless it is genuinely appropriate for you. Compare a base with useful walks against one that needs arranged transport, and confirm your options before committing.

Where would you start for a first visit?
For a beach-first trip, we would start by comparing Kata and Karon. If nightlife is a priority, compare Patong; if architecture and food stops matter more than the beach, consider Old Town. This is a shortlist by interests, not a ranking of the “best” place for everyone.
Is it worth splitting the stay?
Only if the two bases serve genuinely different plans. A town chapter plus a beach stay can make sense, but allow for checkout, luggage and another transfer. For a short visit, one well-chosen base and a day out may be simpler.
Can I choose somewhere without hiring a scooter?
Yes—make the exact hotel location part of the decision. Check which everyday plans work on foot, which require transport and what your return options are. Do not assume every road is comfortable to walk just because the distance looks short.
