THE THAILAND NOTEBOOK01
Five decisions.
Start here.
Choose your main region, first-night transfer, number of stops, island access and entry checks before booking the rest.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Bangkok and the beach, or an island trip through Samui: settle the shape first. These five decisions turn a folder of saved places into a trip you can book.
Start with the route and the arrival airport. They determine how many hotel changes you need, which transfers to price and what your first evening can realistically include.

Useful booking options01 · THE DETAILS
1. Choose the region that gets most of your nights
- MAKE THE DECISION
- Bangkok + Chiang Mai for city food and temples; Bangkok + Phuket for city and beach.
- KEEP IT PRACTICAL
- Adding Phangan or Tao also adds ferry and pier transfers.
For food, temples and city wandering, build around Bangkok and Chiang Mai: Yaowarat and Wat Pho in Bangkok, then the old city and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai. For a city-and-beach trip, pair Bangkok with Phuket. Phuket Old Town gives you shophouses, local food and a Sunday market; the west-coast beaches give you a different base.
For a Gulf island trip, start with Koh Samui and add Koh Phangan or Koh Tao only if you want the extra crossing. Lomprayah links these islands, but each hotel change adds a journey from your room to the pier and another from the next pier to your room. With a week available, our starting suggestion is two main bases. With two weeks, three can work. Those are suggested allocations, not minimum stays.
02 · THE DETAILS
2. Match night one to the airport on your ticket
- MAKE THE DECISION
- BKK: Airport Rail Link on B1; official taxi queue on level 1.
- KEEP IT PRACTICAL
- BKK and DMK are different airports. Check the code on your ticket.

Check the code before choosing a transfer: BKK is Suvarnabhumi; DMK is Don Mueang. At Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link is on level B1 and the official taxi queue is on level 1 between gates 4 and 7. Use the airport's transport page to decide which works with your accommodation address and landing time.
Book the first room with the actual arrival date in mind, especially after a flight crossing midnight. Send the property your expected arrival time and get late check-in instructions if needed. Save its address in Thai, the reception contact and the confirmed transfer meeting point. A hotel advertised as being in Bangkok may still be poorly placed for your first outing or next departure.
03 · THE DETAILS
3. Put the travel days into the night count
- MAKE THE DECISION
- Ten-night example: Bangkok 3, Phuket 6, Bangkok 1.
- KEEP IT PRACTICAL
- A sleeper-train night replaces a hotel night; it does not add a day.
For ten nights with Bangkok flights, try three nights in Bangkok, six in Phuket and one back in Bangkok. That gives you two main stays and puts you in the departure city before the international flight. Compare that with adding Chiang Mai: the extra destination requires another flight and reduces the time available at the coast.
If a sleeper train is part of the appeal, count the night on the train separately from hotel nights. Search Bangkok–Chiang Mai using Krung Thep Aphiwat in SRT's D-Ticket system, then check whether the selected accommodation is a seat or a berth. Do the transport search before paying for non-refundable rooms at both ends.
04 · THE DETAILS
4. Price the expensive choice before the small purchases
- MAKE THE DECISION
- Compare USM flights with URT flights plus the complete island transfer.
- KEEP IT PRACTICAL
- The mainland airfare alone leaves out the road, ferry and last-mile cost.
If Samui is your destination, compare a Bangkok Airways flight to Samui airport (USM) with a flight to Surat Thani (URT) plus a road-and-boat transfer. Lomprayah sells transfers from Surat Thani Airport to the Gulf islands. Put the airport transfer, ferry and journey from the arrival pier to your hotel beside the flight fare before choosing.
Do the same with the accommodation: compare a room near the beach or food area you intend to use with a cheaper room that needs repeated rides. For a group, divide room and vehicle quotes by the people sharing them, but keep individual flight and ferry tickets per person. This usually reveals more than trying to set one daily spending figure for the whole country.
05 · THE DETAILS
5. Check entry requirements, then keep the arrival details ready
- MAKE THE DECISION
- Prepare your flight and first accommodation details for the official TDAC.
- KEEP IT PRACTICAL
- TDAC is not a visa. Your entry position needs a separate check.
Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Thai e-Visa site to check the visa information relevant to your nationality, purpose of travel and place of application. Do this before committing to a stay length. Visa arrangements and the Thailand Digital Arrival Card are separate processes.
The official TDAC service is free and the card is not a visa. Its guide asks for passport, personal, travel, accommodation and health-declaration information. Keep your first accommodation address and flight details ready, then follow the portal's current submission instructions near arrival. Save the confirmation privately with your travel documents.
THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Before you decide.
Can I fit Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a beach into one week?
You can connect them, but two domestic moves will take time from a short stay. Our seven-night starting route uses Bangkok and Chiang Mai; choose Bangkok and Phuket instead if the beach is the priority.
Is Surat Thani Airport on Koh Samui?
No. Surat Thani is on the mainland. Reaching Samui from there requires road transport and a boat; USM is the airport on Samui itself.
Is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card a visa?
No. Immigration's TDAC guide explicitly separates the arrival card from a visa. Check your entry arrangements through the relevant Thai authorities and use the official free TDAC service.
