Getting there & around
Arriving
Koh Tao is ferry-only. Chumphon is the usual mainland gateway from Bangkok, while Surat Thani and the Samui–Phangan route serve travellers coming from the south or Gulf islands. Night boats and high-speed ferries are different experiences; sea conditions and arrival time matter.
Moving around
On islands, the exact beach matters more than the destination name. Shared songthaews, hotel transfers, taxis and rental vehicles vary by island. Never assume a motorbike is the default: licensing, helmets, steep roads, sand and rain change the risk. Group nearby stops by coast.
How much time? Three nights is a sensible minimum after the ferry; allow five or more when completing a dive course or keeping sea days weather-flexible.

When to go
The Gulf does not follow the Andaman pattern exactly. Many travellers favour the drier stretches from late winter into summer, while heavier rain often arrives later in the year. Check the specific island forecast and ferry status rather than relying on a generic ‘Thailand monsoon’ calendar.
Peak season usually improves transport choice and weather confidence, but increases demand. Shoulder and green-season travel can feel more spacious and vivid. Treat this as route guidance, then check live conditions shortly before travelling.
Turn it into a day
Give the place enough time to recover from arrival, learn one local area and enjoy at least one day without a major transfer.
