Where to stay
White Sand Beach The easiest first base for facilities and a developed beach-town rhythm near the northern ferry road.
Klong Prao A spacious central-west choice with resorts, beach sections and useful access to the island interior.
Kai Bae A compact compromise for restaurants, viewpoints and southern boat connections, with hills around the centre.
Lonely Beach and Bailan A more social, budget-led southern base. The road journey is longer and the terrain steeper.
Your first day: finish the ferry journey, then stay local
From the ferry, continue to the beach where you are actually staying—White Sand Beach, Klong Prao, Kai Bae or farther south. The island arrival is not the hotel arrival. Keep the first meal and beach walk around that base, especially after a long road journey from Bangkok.
Ask where shared transport stops, how a late return is arranged and whether your accommodation road is comfortably walkable. Do this before booking a room or evening on the other side of the island. The steep road changes what looks like a short distance on a map.
Choose the west coast carefully
The main visitor bases are not interchangeable. Match the beach, evening atmosphere and road confidence to the group before comparing accommodation.
Walking distances can involve hills, narrow roads and heat even when the map looks compact.
Make waterfalls condition-led
Klong Plu and other waterfalls depend on rainfall, park access and trail conditions. An early visit can be calmer and cooler.
Follow current safety instructions and never treat wet rocks or changed water flow as a fixed attraction setup.
Select one marine route
Nearby-island boat trips vary by pier, vessel, group size and snorkelling route. Compare the complete pickup-to-return day.
Sea conditions and seasonal services should keep the chosen day flexible inside the chapter.
Protect ferry and road connections
The island journey normally combines a road leg through Trat with a vehicle ferry. Save the actual pier and final hotel transfer.
Avoid a tight same-day connection to an international flight; queues, weather and road traffic all remove margin.
A quieter eastern outing: Salak Phet
Salak Phet offers an east-coast contrast to the developed western beach strip. Make the community and coastal setting the purpose of the outing, with a confirmed meal or activity if that matters to you. Do not assume there is a quick road shortcut across the island’s southern end.
Ask a driver for the complete return route and waiting arrangement. For a short chapter, choose this outing or a western waterfall-and-beach day rather than insisting on both. If the long drive is not appealing, spending another day near your chosen beach is a sound decision.
Food, transport and the room price
For seafood, confirm the preparation and total price before ordering a shared meal. A scenic pier or remote resort may be part of the experience, but it also commits you to a return journey. Keep at least some dinners near your room so different appetites or evening plans do not require a group vehicle.
Separate the budget into room, ordinary meals, local journeys and one optional marine or nature day. A cheap room far uphill may not be cheap once transport is added. For a private island outing, split the vehicle quote among participants and ask which admissions or boat costs remain outside it.
How to leave the island without a scramble
Record hotel pickup, the named ferry connection and the onward mainland journey separately. Check the current operator instructions rather than using a previous season’s timetable. A ticket whose destination is Bangkok may still require you to get independently to the first meeting point.
Keep the last full day close enough to return easily. A distant boat outing immediately before a tight departure adds avoidable risk. For friends leaving at different times, shared accommodation does not require a shared final excursion or identical transfer booking.
What catches first-time visitors out
