THE UDON THANI FIELD GUIDE
Your first day in Udon Thani.
Noodles, lake life and an evening at UD Town.
Named places. Useful choices. Your kind of day.
Where to eat, what to see and where to go tonight in Udon Thani.

Start with Kao.Piak.Sen, explore the Nong Prajak side of the city and use UD Town when everyone wants something different for dinner.
Udon has an easy city version and a separate out-of-town version. These choices show where to eat and spend your time, with Ban Chiang and the seasonal Red Lotus Lake kept distinct from the city lake.

Kao.Piak.Sen: a concrete breakfast stop
- THE IDEA
- A named restaurant rather than a vague hunt for local food.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Check the actual menu if you have dietary requirements.
At Kao.Piak.Sen on Sri Suk Road, the signature order is khao piak: rice noodles in broth. The menu also includes Vietnamese-style bánh bôt loc, chewy rolls with shrimp and minced pork, so there is something specific to compare rather than just ordering 'whatever is local'.
Save the restaurant pin before leaving your accommodation. It is a useful meal anchor for the city, not a reason to cross the entire province; prices and today's dishes are best checked on the menu when you arrive.
CITY TIME
Nong Prajak Park and the City Museum
- THE IDEA
- A lake walk with a nearby city-history option.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- This is not the Red Lotus Lake shown in seasonal boat photographs.

Nong Prajak Park is the city-lake choice: go for the waterside paths and the conspicuous yellow-duck landmark. If you want more context, add Udon Thani City Museum as a separate stop rather than treating the park as the whole visit.
Choose the museum when local history appeals or an indoor visit fits the weather. Check its opening day before changing your route. For another substantial meal, Krua Khun Nid is a named Isan option; MICHELIN highlights its fish dishes, including deep-fried fermented fish.
YOUR EVENING
UD Town: food bazaar or a sit-down meal
- THE IDEA
- An identifiable dining and shopping complex with several choices.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Individual outlets and events set their own availability.
Use UD Town for a straightforward evening meeting point. Its official directory separates the Food Bazaar from other dining zones, so you can choose a food-court-style meal or look through the sit-down restaurants without committing the whole group to one dish.
Check the current directory when you arrive and agree a specific meeting spot inside the complex. Events are an extra, not something this guide promises every night; an advertised performance needs its own date check.
IF YOU WANT TO GO FURTHER
Ban Chiang or Red Lotus Lake: two different trips
- THE IDEA
- Archaeology at Ban Chiang, or a seasonal lake outing.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Both require travel beyond the city; a lotus display cannot be guaranteed.
Ban Chiang is the history choice: the UNESCO-listed archaeological site and national museum explain prehistoric settlement through excavated objects and displays. Ask for transport to Ban Chiang National Museum in Nong Han district, not just to an unspecified 'museum in Udon'.
Red Lotus Lake is at Nong Han Kumphawapi, a different outing from Nong Prajak Park. Flower conditions are seasonal, so get a current report from the boat operator before paying for a transfer. Pick the trip that matches your interest; neither is presented as a quick stop between city restaurants.
THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Before you decide.
Is Red Lotus Lake in the centre?
No. Nong Prajak is the city lake. The seasonal lotus outing is at Nong Han Kumphawapi and needs separate transport.
What is the city-only version?
Kao.Piak.Sen for a meal, Nong Prajak Park and the City Museum if open, then UD Town for the evening.
Will saving this create plans in My Diary?
No. Saving keeps the guide as an idea. Choose what to add to a day yourself; nothing here makes a booking or changes your trip automatically.
GOOD FINDS. YOUR DIARY.
Not planning yet?
Keep the idea.
Save this guide to your favourites. It stays an idea—not an automatic plan in your trip.
