THE KHAO LAK FIELD GUIDE
Your first day in Khao Lak:
beach, market or a seafood table.
Named places. Useful choices. Your kind of day.
Where to eat, what to see and where to go tonight in Khao Lak.
See the places & practical links
Nang Thong for a beach-and-town combination, Bang Niang for market food and Krachang for a specific seafood dinner. Khao Lak is a coastline, not one compact resort.
The important first choice is your neighbourhood. A hotel sold as 'Khao Lak' may be some distance from Nang Thong, Bang Niang or the restaurant you have in mind. These options give you a beach, a food market, a named seafood restaurant and a bookable cooking alternative. Choose them around your actual hotel location and arrival time.

For a beach and town in one outing: Nang Thong
- THE IDEA
- A beach visit with nearby shops and restaurant streets.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Check the hotel's actual distance from Bang La On.

Nang Thong beach and the inland village of Bang La On make a useful pair: the Tourism Authority identifies Bang La On as the central Khao Lak area with shops, restaurants and travel services.
Use Nang Thong for the beach portion, then head inland towards Bang La On for food or practical errands. This is a clear mainland outing if you only have a few hours, with no need to treat a Similan boat tour as the automatic first-day plan.
Food & early evening
For street-food choices: Bang Niang Market
- THE IDEA
- Several food stalls rather than one restaurant menu.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- The main market does not operate every day.
Bang Niang Market's own site lists skewers, spring rolls, seafood and fruit among its stalls. That makes it a concrete place to assemble a meal from several small choices, as well as browse clothes and handicrafts.
The operator currently lists Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, from afternoon into the evening. Check that list for your date before taking a special journey. Thursday is included on the operator's page even though some older tourism descriptions leave it out.
Lam Kaen
For a seafood dinner: Krachang Khao Lak
- THE IDEA
- A named Thai seafood restaurant with daily specials.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Its Lam Kaen location may be a separate journey from your resort.
Krachang Khao Lak is at Lam Kaen, not inside Bang Niang Market. Michelin's current listing describes a daily seafood specials board and highlights shrimp in coconut soup with melinjo leaves, plus turmeric-grilled fish as dishes to look for.
Ask what is available that day rather than assuming those exact fish dishes are guaranteed. Michelin currently lists Tuesday as closed; use the restaurant contact in the listing to confirm a table. This is a guide-listed restaurant, not a claim that it holds a Michelin star.
Book ahead
For a planned cooking afternoon: OUTRIGGER's Thai class
- THE IDEA
- Cook a meal instead of taking another sightseeing tour.
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Requires advance booking; check access if you are not a resort guest.
OUTRIGGER Khao Lak Beach Resort publishes a Thai cooking session that starts with ingredients from its kitchen garden and finishes with the dishes you make. Its example menus include tom kha gai and pad thai, or tom yum and chicken with cashews, followed by banana in coconut milk.
The resort asks for booking a day ahead. If you arrive today without a booking, treat this as an option to enquire about rather than a guaranteed walk-in activity. Confirm non-resident participation, dietary adjustments and the total price including tax and service.
THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Before you decide.
Is Bang Niang Market open every evening?
No. Its own site currently lists Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Check before making a special journey.
What if I have only a few hours?
Choose Nang Thong with Bang La On, or make Bang Niang Market the outing when it is operating. You do not need to book an offshore day trip to have a specific plan.
Will saving this create plans in My Diary?
No. Saving keeps the guide as an idea. Choose what to add to a day yourself; nothing here makes a booking or changes your trip automatically.
GOOD FINDS. YOUR DIARY.
Not planning yet?
Keep the idea.
Save this guide to your favourites. It stays an idea—not an automatic plan in your trip.
