THE CHIANG MAI FIELD GUIDE
Hello, Chiang Mai.
Temples, noodles or a night out?
Named places. Useful choices. Your kind of day.
Where to eat, what to see and where to go tonight in Chiang Mai.
See the places & practical links
Walk the Old City, order khao soi on Ratchaphruek Road, browse the Sunday market or go straight to North Gate for music. Pick the version that fits your day.
The useful first-day choice is what you came for. Historic streets, northern food and a live-music night each have a clear starting point here.

For the Old City: Tha Phae Gate to Wat Phra Singh.
- THE IDEA
- A straightforward Old City introduction
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Temples are active religious places with visitor rules
Tha Phae Gate marks the eastern side of the old walled city. Head into Ratchadamnoen Road towards Wat Phra Singh if you want a route with a clear beginning and destination rather than a list of temples scattered across Chiang Mai.
Wat Phra Singh is the stop for decorated temple buildings and murals. If that is the main reason for your visit, go directly there; there is no requirement to complete the street walk first. The same road hosts the Sunday Walking Street, but its market setup is a separate evening event.
Lunch or dinner
For northern food: two addresses on Ratchaphruek Road.
- THE IDEA
- A specific dish or a meal to share
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- The two restaurants close on different days
For a bowl of khao soi, head to Khao Soi Mae Sai at 29/1 Ratchaphruek Road. Michelin's current listing describes curry noodles with a choice of meat toppings and lists it as a daytime, cash-only stop, closed Sunday. It is not a late-night option.
For a sit-down spread, Huen Muan Jai at number 24 serves northern Thai dishes in a Lanna-style house and garden. Its menu includes dips and soups; Michelin highlights galangal dip with steamed mushrooms and vegetable soup with snakehead fish. The current listing closes Wednesday, so use the links to choose the right stop for your date.
Browse and eat
For the market: Sunday means Ratchadamnoen Road.
- THE IDEA
- Crafts and an evening street-food browse
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- This is specifically a Sunday event

On Sunday, use Tha Phae Gate as the meeting point for the Walking Street along Ratchadamnoen Road. TAT describes the route continuing through the Old City towards Wat Phra Singh, with handicrafts and other market goods on the way.
Go for the browsing and choose food from what is actually trading that evening. On another day, do not expect the same road to become the same market: book dinner at Huen Muan Jai on an operating day, or use North Gate's current programme if music is the priority.
After dinner
For live music: North Gate Jazz Co-op.
- THE IDEA
- A music-led night in the city
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Check the actual programme; no guaranteed seat or lineup
North Gate Jazz Co-op is the named stop if you want music on your first night. The operator places it beside the Old City's north gate at 95/1–2 Sri Phum Road. Use the Jazz Co-op location link, as the collective now also lists a separate café, cocktail bar and other spaces.
You can go straight there after arrival or combine it with dinner; a night out does not depend on completing a daytime itinerary. Check its current channels for who is playing and any event arrangements. We are recommending the venue for its jazz focus, not promising a particular band or claiming every performance is free.
THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Before you decide.
What should I do if I only have one evening?
On Sunday, choose the Walking Street from Tha Phae Gate. On other nights, a northern Thai dinner and North Gate Jazz Co-op make a more relevant plan than a list of closed daytime sights.
Is the Sunday Walking Street there every evening?
No. The Ratchadamnoen Walking Street covered here is specifically Sunday; check the separate market or venue you intend to visit on other days.
Will saving this create plans in My Diary?
No. Saving keeps the guide as an idea. Choose what to add to a day yourself; nothing here makes a booking or changes your trip automatically.
