THE AYUTTHAYA FIELD GUIDE
Hello, Ayutthaya.
Ruins, noodles and the river.
Named places. Useful choices. Your kind of day.
Where to eat, what to see and where to go tonight in Ayutthaya.
See the places & practical links
Find the Buddha head at Wat Mahathat, order boat noodles at Pa Lek, or choose river prawns beside Pom Phet. A first day can be focused without being empty.
Use the historic island for the central ruins, then decide whether your extra stop is another temple or a meal by the river.

For the classic ruins: Wat Mahathat and Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
- THE IDEA
- Recognisable sights with clear map pins
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Separate sites and admissions, not one indoor attraction
Wat Mahathat is the destination for the Buddha head enclosed in tree roots. Wat Phra Si Sanphet is the former royal monastery with the three large bell-shaped chedis. Choose the former for that famous detail and the latter for a broader ruined-temple setting.
They are separate stops on the historic island. Map the connection before deciding whether to walk, cycle or hire a vehicle; a map pin labelled Ayutthaya Historical Park does not explain every entrance. Check current tickets at the relevant site instead of assuming one admission covers all ruins.
A named food stop
For lunch: Pa Lek Boat Noodles.
- THE IDEA
- A quick pork or beef noodle meal
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Cash only; listed closed Wednesday
Pa Lek Boat Noodles is on Bang-Ain Road in Tha Wasukri. Michelin describes small bowls of pork or beef boat noodles; order according to appetite rather than expecting one bowl to be a large restaurant main.
The current listing says cash only and closed Wednesday. Check the linked listing or phone before an early visit; seating is not guaranteed.
Pom Phet / U Thong Road
For dinner with a view: Baan Pomphet.
- THE IDEA
- Grilled river prawns and a riverside table
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- A different price point from a small noodle shop
Baan Pomphet at 13/5 U Thong Road sits beside Pom Phet fortress, where the Chao Phraya and Pa Sak rivers meet. The kitchen's specialities include charcoal-grilled river prawns; this is the option when you want the meal and setting to be the main event.
Book ahead if you specifically want a riverside dinner table. Confirm the prawn size, portion and current price before ordering rather than assuming one fixed cost from an old menu. If you arrive after sightseeing hours, dinner here is a useful first-night plan in its own right.
Match the remaining time
For your extra stop: river temple or museum.
- THE IDEA
- A substantial second visit, chosen for the conditions
- USEFUL TO KNOW
- Wat Chaiwatthanaram is across the river from the central island

Choose Wat Chaiwatthanaram if you want the Khmer-style temple beside the river. TAT places it opposite the southwest corner of the historic island, on the other bank of the Chao Phraya: give your driver the temple name rather than treating it as the next doorway after Wat Mahathat.
For indoor historical context, look at Chao Sam Phraya National Museum instead; TAT recommends it for an overview of Ayutthaya's past. Check the museum's current opening before making it the rainy-day anchor. With limited time, either makes a clearer second choice than buying a tour that only allows a photograph at each stop.
THE LITTLE THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Before you decide.
What if I have just half a day?
Pick Wat Mahathat or Wat Phra Si Sanphet, then a meal. Add Wat Chaiwatthanaram only with enough time for the separate riverbank journey; the museum is an alternative rather than an obligatory extra.
Is Baan Pomphet a boat-noodle stop?
No. It is a sit-down riverside restaurant known for grilled river prawns. Pa Lek is the small-bowl noodle option; compare menus rather than treating both as the same budget.
Will saving this create plans in My Diary?
No. Saving keeps the guide as an idea. Choose what to add to a day yourself; nothing here makes a booking or changes your trip automatically.
