First, get your bearings in Koh Tao.
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Understand how the bases relate before comparing rooms.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- A broad destination label does not describe every property’s setting.

Koh Tao is small enough to invite casual planning, yet its bays do not work like streets in one flat town. Mae Haad is the port and a practical service base. Sairee has the more social beach-and-restaurant concentration, while Chalok Baan Kao offers a southern village alternative. Outlying bays can feel much more self-contained. The attraction of a secluded room is inseparable from the terrain and the journeys required to leave it.
For a diving trip, put the school or meeting point beside the accommodation on the map before comparing facilities. Early starts and repeated sessions make that everyday connection more important than one distant viewpoint. Non-divers have a different freedom: a beach, some food nearby and a comfortable way back may matter more than a pier-side location. Decide whether you want to roam between village centres or mostly enjoy one bay. A remote resort can suit the second perfectly without being a convenient choice for the first.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY NEARBY
The places behind the area names.
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Specific food, sightseeing or transport anchors.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- A district name does not establish the walk from a particular hotel.
Mae Haad: Mae Haad pier For the port town and a practical short-stay starting point. Not the same evening scene as staying in Sairee.
Sairee: Sairee beach and village For restaurants and beach nightlife in the same neighbourhood. Room position matters if you want to be near nightlife without sleeping beside it.
Chalok: Chalok Baan Kao For a village base on the southern side. Expect a separate journey for Sairee's evening venues.
01 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Sairee
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Sairee for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
The social centre for dive schools, sunset, restaurants and nightlife. Choose the exact position carefully if early sleep matters.
Sairee suits people who want a broad choice of food and a sociable beach setting. Check the exact room position and evening noise rather than judging the whole beach as one experience.

Mae Haad

- Consider Mae Haad for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
The practical pier base for short stays and easy arrivals. It has services and dive operators but less of the classic beach-holiday feel.
Mae Haad is useful for ferry logistics and local services. Confirm whether the room is on a busy approach or a quieter side street, and what the walk to your chosen activity involves.

Chalok Baan Kao
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Chalok Baan Kao for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
A calmer southern base with its own restaurants and access to nearby bays. It suits travellers who do not need Sairee every evening.
Chalok Baan Kao offers a southern base. Compare nearby services and the journey to any dive provider you have already selected; a package pickup can make a difference.
04 / CHOOSE YOUR SETTING
Eastern and private bays
- CHOOSE IT FOR
- Consider Eastern and private bays for the setting described below.
- THE TRADE-OFF
- Check the exact property and everyday journeys, not just the area label.
Best when the bay and resort are the destination. Steep access and limited evening movement need to be accepted in advance.
Eastern and more secluded bays need property-specific checks. Ask about steep roads, steps, boat access and meals. A beautiful view is not enough information about daily mobility.
