Make the connection.

Bangkok–Chiang Mai is the straightforward train-versus-flight comparison. Choose rail when the journey is part of the trip; choose a flight when you want to preserve time at the destination. For Chiang Mai–Phuket, search the direct flight first: AirAsia's October 2026 network lists that route.

For Koh Samui, compare USM with URT plus a combined road-and-boat ticket. For Koh Tao, Lomprayah lists connections from Chumphon, Surat Thani and Samui. Use the exact origin in the booking search: airport, train station, city office and pier are different products. A boat-only ticket does not cover the journey from an airport simply because both places are labelled Surat Thani.

Use SRT's D-Ticket website for the route, travel date and carriage selection. The official Northern Line timetable names Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat and Chiang Mai. Do not tell a driver only 'Bangkok railway station'; save the station on your actual ticket.

Compare the accommodation offered by each departure. A second-class seat and a second-class sleeping berth are different purchases; select the berth if sleeping is the reason for booking. Check whether your choice is air-conditioned and whether the berth position suits you. Keep the train number, date, carriage and seat or berth number with the confirmation.

A train arriving in the morning can leave a gap before hotel check-in. Ask the property about luggage storage or early access before you count on a shower or room. Use D-Ticket's current instructions for ticket format, passenger identification and changes; booking windows and refund rules can vary by ticket.

BKK is Suvarnabhumi and DMK is Don Mueang. Do not infer the airport from the airline: Thai AirAsia resumed BKK services to Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket on 1 October 2026 while continuing to operate at DMK. Check the code for each individual flight, including the return.

USM is on Koh Samui. URT is Surat Thani on the mainland, so an onward island trip needs road transport and a boat. Compare the total journey price with the baggage you will take. A small base airfare plus a bag, airport transfers and a ferry may be a different proposition from the first number on the screen.

If two flights require a change between BKK and DMK, treat that as a road transfer between airports. AOT publishes an airport shuttle for qualifying connecting passengers, but its availability does not make a tight connection protected. Read the booking's actual connection and baggage terms before committing.

If your international flight leaves Bangkok, consider returning there the previous day. From an island, that may mean a ferry, road transfer and domestic flight before the final hotel night. The benefit is reducing dependence on several separate services arriving precisely on time.

Lomprayah's terms state that it does not reimburse costs for missed connecting flights or trains. Before buying any separate tickets, check which company handles each leg and what happens if the first is delayed. Keep the operator, reference, departure point, check-in time and contact number together; a payment notification alone will not tell you where to board.
