Krabi for the first time
Where to base yourself, how Railay fits and why Krabi’s limestone coast needs a flexible plan rather than a stack of interchangeable boat tours.
Krabi is used as shorthand for several places that do different jobs. Ao Nang is the practical visitor base, Railay is a boat-access peninsula, Krabi Town is a local transport and food centre, and quieter beaches extend northwest along the mainland. Choosing between them matters more than adding another island name.
Three to five nights is a sensible first stay. Protect one boat day, give Railay or the chosen beach real time and leave enough flexibility for sea conditions.
Where to stay
Ao Nang The easiest all-round base for restaurants, transfers and a wide choice of boat departures. It is convenient and busy rather than secluded.
Railay Best when the cliffs, beaches and car-free atmosphere are the point. Every arrival involves a boat, which changes luggage, late arrivals and onward connections.
Krabi Town A practical local base for markets, food and onward transport. Choose it for town life or a short connection, not for a beach holiday.
Klong Muang and Tubkaek Quieter resort areas northwest of Ao Nang. They suit slower stays but offer fewer casual options and longer journeys to some departure points.
A sensible first day: settle into the real base
If staying in Ao Nang, use the first day to understand the beachfront, departure points and the quieter streets behind it. If staying at Railay, let the arrival and peninsula become the day rather than immediately booking another boat.
Krabi’s heat and transfers make a light arrival day valuable. Save the exact pier and return instructions before walking away from the boat.
Make Railay a decision, not a checkbox
Railay and Phra Nang can be visited from Ao Nang, but an overnight stay creates quieter early and late hours. The trade-off is that luggage, weather and every onward journey depend on boat access.
Climbing should be arranged with a reputable local operator appropriate to your experience. Heat, equipment, instruction and route conditions matter more than the photograph at the top.
Choose the boat day by product
Hong Islands, the Four Islands route and Phi Phi involve different travel times and crowd patterns. Compare the full pickup-to-return day, not only the list of stops.
Ask about vessel type, passenger capacity, park fees, food, shade, snorkelling equipment and the cancellation or rerouting policy. Nature controls the final itinerary.
Arriving and moving around
Krabi Airport connects by road with Krabi Town, Ao Nang and mainland resorts. Railay requires a final boat. Ferry arrivals may use different piers, so confirm the onward transfer before travel.
Songthaews, local taxis, booked transfers and boats connect the main bases. Group mainland stops together; repeatedly travelling between Krabi Town, Ao Nang and distant piers wastes the relaxed rhythm people come for.
Keep the sea day movable
The drier Andaman period normally offers more dependable boat conditions, while monsoon months can reduce services and change marine access. Weather can still interrupt any season.
Fix accommodation and high-stakes transfers, but keep the precise boat day changeable until the forecast and local advice become useful.
What catches first-time visitors out
- Using ‘Krabi’ as an exact location.The airport, town, Ao Nang, Railay and ferry piers are separate journey points.
- Booking duplicate island tours.Choose one strong boat day and use the saved time to enjoy the base.
- Arriving at Railay too late with heavy luggage.Confirm the boat and landing arrangements with the accommodation.
- Ignoring park fees and exclusions.Ask what the advertised price actually includes before paying.
- Treating a fixed route as guaranteed.Skippers and park authorities may change plans for safety or conservation.
