OUR GUIDE
Koh Samui for the first time
How to choose the right coast, arrive without turning the ferry into an afterthought and give Samui enough time to feel like an island rather than a tour base.Check the linked sources for current details. Editorial information, not live availability.

Koh Samui is large enough for its beach towns to feel like separate holidays. Chaweng is energetic, Bophut is polished and walkable around Fisherman’s Village, Lamai is a relaxed middle ground, and the western coast trades convenience for space and quieter sunsets.
Four to six nights makes the flight or ferry journey worthwhile. That allows ordinary beach time, one interior or cultural day and a flexible marine-park or island outing without scheduling every morning.
Where to stay
Bophut A balanced first-time base with Fisherman’s Village, restaurants and a comfortable evening stroll. It feels polished and can be busy on market nights.
Chaweng The strongest choice for nightlife, a broad beach and maximum convenience. Stay away from the centre if sleep matters more than being inside the action.
Lamai A smaller, more relaxed resort centre with an easy beach-holiday rhythm. It still has plenty of restaurants without Chaweng’s scale.
Maenam A quieter north-coast choice for slower stays and longer beaches. Check evening transport and the immediate hotel surroundings.
Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam Western bases for space, sunsets and resort time. They are less convenient for repeatedly crossing to the island’s busiest areas.
A sensible first day: stay on your coast
Let the arrival determine the pace. Settle into the chosen beach, find food nearby and learn how transport works before committing to the opposite side of the island.
If arriving by ferry, record the actual pier; Samui has several. If flying, remember that the airport transfer is still a road journey and can vary significantly by coast.

Use one day to understand the island
A focused loop might combine one cultural stop, an inland viewpoint or waterfall and lunch away from the resort strip. It should not become a race around every statue and viewpoint.
Road conditions, rain and traffic affect the loop. A driver can make sense for a group; a rental vehicle only makes sense with the correct licence, insurance and experience.
Treat Ang Thong as a full marine day
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park is a weather-dependent day rather than a guaranteed collection of stops. Compare departure pier, boat type, passenger numbers, kayaking, viewpoint effort and park fees.
The well-known viewpoint is physically demanding in heat. A good day remains worthwhile when you choose activities that match the travellers, not only the promotional image.
Arriving by air, rail and ferry
Samui has its own airport. The lower-cost alternative usually combines train, bus or flight to the Surat Thani area with a road transfer and ferry. Through-tickets can reduce friction, but still check every terminal and connection.
Avoid placing a ferry immediately before a separate international flight. Weather, road delays and changed piers can remove the buffer quickly.
The Gulf has its own weather rhythm
Samui does not follow the Andaman’s seasonal pattern exactly, and heavier rain often arrives later in the year. No month guarantees calm seas or uninterrupted sun.
Use regional climate information for the route and live local forecasts for boat days. Keep one land-based alternative ready.
Two land days with different personalities
Make Bophut a food-and-streets evening around the old shophouse area, with time to compare menus before sitting down. It is an outing in its own right, not a short compulsory shopping stop after a full island tour. If you stay on another coast, settle the return journey before the evening begins.
For a separate southern outing, use Lamai and the Hin Ta–Hin Yai coastal rocks as the focus, then decide whether a stop at Na Muang fits the conditions and energy of the group. Wet rock and a waterfall photograph are not reasons to ignore local restrictions. Keep the route short enough to enjoy lunch rather than spend the day circling the island.
Food, rooms and the real daily budget
A cooking class, Muay Thai session or yoga class can offer a worthwhile land-based alternative to Ang Thong. Ask the actual venue about the level, duration and what is included. Do not assume a hotel activity programme and an independent class provide the same experience.
The big cost choice is often where you sleep relative to where you eat. A villa can work for friends sharing the cost, but add the journeys for groceries and dinners before comparing it with rooms in a walkable beach area. Split shared transport among those using it, and keep individual activities separate so a quieter traveller is not paying for everybody else’s excursion.
A four-night stay without constant excursions
Allow arrival and one local coast day, one optional Ang Thong day, and one deliberately chosen land outing. Keep the marine day movable rather than placing it automatically on the last full day. There is no need to visit Phangan or Tao on top of this just because both appear nearby on the map.
If the trip already includes another island, compare what the extra Samui tour actually adds. Beach time, a food evening and a class may provide more variety than a second similar snorkelling programme. Leave the remaining hours uncommitted; that is a holiday plan, not a missing activity.
What catches first-time visitors out
- Choosing Samui without choosing a coast. The daily experience changes substantially between Chaweng, Bophut, Lamai and the west.
- Assuming every ferry uses the same pier.Save the exact mainland and island terminals for each leg.
- Hiring a scooter by default.Licensing, insurance, helmets, rain and road experience all matter.
- Overfilling the island loop. One good landscape and a long lunch beat ten roadside photo stops.
- Leaving no departure buffer.Protect important flights from ferry and road disruption.
