Kanchanaburi is both a riverside town and a very large province. Museums and memorials sit near town, while waterfalls, Sai Yok and Sangkhlaburi require progressively longer journeys.

Where to stay
Kanchanaburi town The easiest first base for museums, the bridge area, restaurants and Bangkok transport.
River Kwai Noi A scenic resort corridor towards Sai Yok. It suits slower stays but is not a convenient town-centre address.
Sai Yok A nature-led base for river and national-park plans, requiring deliberate transfers and fewer spontaneous evenings.
Sangkhlaburi A remote border-region chapter that needs several days and should never be treated as a quick extension from town.
A sensible first day in Kanchanaburi
Keep arrival day close to the chosen base. Confirm the exact address, onward transport and the first practical meal before adding a distant excursion.

Give the history proper context
Use a museum, cemetery and bridge or railway site as a connected story rather than a collection of wartime photographs.
These are places of loss and remembrance. Quiet behaviour and historically responsible interpretation matter.

The waterfall is well beyond town and the seven-level trail takes time. Start early and check current water, trail and swimming conditions.
Footwear, heat and mobility should determine how far the group climbs; reaching every tier is not required for a worthwhile visit.
Separate Sai Yok from the town day
Sai Yok's river, caves and railway landscape need their own route. Compare a guided day, independent transport and an overnight stay by total journey time.
Do not place distant province attractions into the same day simply because they share the Kanchanaburi label.
Build the Bangkok connection honestly
Train, bus, minivan and private transfer arrive in different places and offer different levels of comfort and flexibility.
If continuing west, keep the onward vehicle and luggage plan visible instead of assuming the town is the final stop.
